OK; Let's get serious: Wrestling

I remain committed to making wrestling somehow a viable combat skill. However, I still have not seen an idea that I necessarily really like. That is not necessarily to say that no one has suggested one - just that no one has suggested one while I was paying attention.


Some general goals and thoughts on this;

One major thing I've seen mentioned is to give it a 'disarming' ability. This is not really practical because we are not a PvP shard. Even in PvP, a Disarming ability had sort of a minimal effect, because people simply learned to get ready to re-equip their weapons instantly when it happened. It's best use on OSI was as a thief, to disarm those trying to kill you after you stole from them. err.. not that I would know, first-hand, or anything...

Against monsters, such a thing simply is not relevant in most cases, and in cases where it is relevant, it would likely be far overpowered without some fairly major overhaul to monster AI to make armed monsters delay a certain (perhaps random or skill-based) amount of time until they re-equip. However, the balancing act required would be difficult, and the usefulness of disarming would remain very limited. I think the best use would likely be simply to disarm archers, but again we're left with the balancing act. Not something I'm unwilling to play with, but it seems to be of limited use.

In the end, perhaps this could be a small part of what wrestling gets; the ability to disarm those foes who do carry weapons; but there would be balances against it, and it could not be all that wrestling gets.




Another thing spoken of at times is to have some sort of gloves or gauntlets that allow wrestlers to do respectable damage. This might be something, again, that could be one small part of what wrestling gets. I would be concerned, however, with such a feature simply making wrestling 'just another combat skill', where types of gloves are the new weapons for this skill. So ultimately, the damage done by wrestlers with powerful gloves would not approach that done by large weapons, for example. But, such a thing is perhaps possible as one aspect.




The above two sort of begin to paint a picture of wrestling as sort of a weapon skill of various little 'tricks'. Of course, another benefit to wrestling would be that while equipped for wrestling (that is, while you do not have any other weapon equipped), your wrestling skill is used against the combat skill of your enemies, so it already provides some protection in that way. That protection is fairly useless right now, especially considering that even mages can have a staff in their hands while casting spells... and in fact, they almost always will WANT to have such a weapon while casting.




So, perhaps one or two other possible things for wrestling would be worthwhile to consider, or maybe someone has a more broad idea for it!
