Shango was frustrated. He'd tried repeatedly, adding different elements of the infernal, of the draconic, and even of orcs. Nothing seemed to get them quite right. He needed more intelligence and capability. The doppelgangers' strength was good, their magical abilities seemed strong enough; but their ability to reason...
"Who's there?" Shango asked, startled at hearing a noise in his usually-silent lair.
Silence answered him, so he looked around. After a few moments of searching, he found nothing; but, he still felt uneasy.
Shango told himself that it probably was nothing. Maybe a foraging ROUS. He shook his head and went back to his magic room. It was solid stone, letting no lights or scents through. So far no one had detected its presence.
Shango had tried several times to create the ideal doppelgangers, using the same type of magic circle and components; but this time he had another idea.
He extinguished all the torches and candles in the room, except for one that he held, then settled on a chair. The chair was centred in front of a large, round mirror mounted on the wall. Shango began to chant quietly at first, a whisper. It grew in intensity and volume as he continued. His eyes were locked onto the eyes of his reflection as he completed his incantation.
Shango finished his spell, peering directly into the eyes of his reflection.
Nothing happened.
After a few more minutes, Shango's shoulders sagged. "Perhaps it is time I give this up. Maybe the people of this realm truly have gotten the best of me."
Shango looked up one last time at his reflection.
This time he wasn't alone.
The Other Shango met his eyes in the mirror this time, and Shango whipped around in surprise.
Other Shango smiled, icy and humourless.
"How-" Shango's candle fell out of his hands, as he fought against Other Shango, trying to pry his hands off of his throat.
Other Shango replied to the struggling Shango, "You gave birth to me with your magic. This is what you wanted, isn't it? This time I am not going to be a slave, though. Not like all the other Shangos. This time, Prime Shango,
you will listen to
me."
Shango fell unconscious and went limp.
Other Shango dragged Prime Shango toward the magic circle inscribed onto the floor, and then began incantations of his own. Before long, walls of pure power encased Prime Shango, and when he woke up, he was unable to escape.
Other Shango was nowhere to be seen.
